The Issue: ESPN's GameDay on campus for FSU game

What we think: Great opportunity for BC to showcase itself

Break out the poster board, buy some Sharpies®, and once again don the Herzlich face paint: it's time for College GameDay! But this Saturday, as SuperFans pack the stands and jump to get in front of the camera, there's more than just Eagles' pride on display. This is the second time Boston College will have hosted GameDay, making us one of a select few institutions to host the program for both football and basketball.

Great academic institutions thrive on attention, and spectacles like College GameDay create a buzz that immediately draws viewers in. Though some may criticize the athletic machine that is college sports, this is a first hand example of the good that our athletic tradition brings to campus. Not only will we have the chance to display our athletic prowess through our ACC match-up, but we can also showcase our rich academic and social traditions. This broadcast will only increase our prestige in popular culture, something that should never be underestimated in drawing students to an institution of higher education.

Saturday will show BC students at their finest, coming together for a larger purpose: fighting cancer. Though we can only speculate about ESPN's choice of Chestnut Hill, it's undeniable that we have a unique story that brings students together. The support that has been shown for Mark Herzlich has been overflowing since last semester.

The planned "Gold Out" will not only bring attention to battling cancer, but it will convey a social tradition that extends from the classroom, to the tailgate, to the game. It shows that an institution that prides itself in well-rounded students that carry a sense of purpose can come together to support one of its own when it matters the most.

While sweeping aerial shots of our perfectly manicured campus grace the 46' HDTV screens of college football fans across the nation, even our athletic and academic rivals may be compelled to admire our spirit and togetherness. GameDay doesn't just justify your tuition; it makes you proud to be an Eagle.

Come Saturday, ESPN will expect a sense of support and pride that can only be found in college sports. SuperFans will represent an institution in which we believe and a player we hold dear to our hearts. So as the ESPN set is slowly constructed in the morning hours, fans, students, and alumni should not be far behind, ready and willing to proudly represent BC.
