Thumbs Up A biker-friendly Boston: Attempting to pedal aside its reputation as one of the worst biking cities in the country, Mayor Thomas Menino has vowed to make Boston "a bicyclist's dream," according to the Globe, with the possible introduction of new bike racks, showers, and an extensive network of rental terminals. Following the lead of Paris, San Francisco, and Seattle, the newly converted cycler announced "the hiring of a bike czar, former Olympic cyclist Nicole Freedman, and a first phase of improvements to include 250 new bike racks across Boston and an online map system." Although bikers are skeptical of these new plans - since it has been promised before - Boston could become a premier cycling neighborhood, encouraging a healthy lifestyle and respect for the environment.
Nights on the Heights: It's always been a great idea, in theory, but this programming committee has suffered from a lack of resources to get off the ground. This year, however, their hard work is paying off. Last weekend, Nights on the Heights organized a sneak peak of The Kingdom at Cleveland Circle. These are the types of programs students want and will attend. The committee has been pumping out solid events week after week, demonstrating its committment to providing alternatives on the weekend. The e-mail before the weekend, as well as on-campus fliers, are great ways to raise awareness
Pops on the Heights: Five-time Academy Award winner John Williams, the musical mastermind behind some of the most recognizable scores in history, conducted a record-breaking performance for a sold-out crowd. The gala raised over $2 million dollars in scholarships for Boston College students. The show, as usual, was a hit with parents and students alike.
BC Football: Although football has been a consistent Thumbs Up for the past several weeks, it deserves it. With a 24-14 win over UMass, combined with the collapse of many teams in the top 10, BC surged to No. 7 in the AP Poll. For the Eagles, it's their highest ranking since the final AP Poll of 1984, when they were ranked No. 5 in the country after defeating Houston in the Cotton Bowl. This is also the Eagles' first 5-0 start since 1954.
Thumbs Down Carpeting in elevators: The only thing worse than someone getting sick in an elevator after a hard night of partying is being reminded of it when climbing into the same elevator the next morning. Carpeting makes no sense - it is impossible for the janitors to clean, it's always stained, and it smells really, really bad. For anyone who hates tight spaces ... your nightmare just got worse.
Seat-saving in large lectures: You arrive 15 minutes early to your huge class in Devlin 008 and it looks empty, but think again: There are invisible people sitting in those seats! Alas, you had cut short your precious sleep and you still have nowhere to sit. This needs to stop: get there on time, or forfeit sitting by your friends. You aren't going to talk to them during the lecture anyway.
