Thumbs Up

THE "NEW IVIES" LIST: Newsweek's list of the nation's up-and-coming universities listed Boston College as one of 25 "New Ivies." BC was lauded for its academic and extracurricular opportunities. It's not news to us here in Chestnut Hill, but it certainly is nice recognition.

WHEATIES: Yesterday Wheaties unveiled its newest breakfast champion, our very own Doug Flutie. Flutie's 1984 Hail Mary Pass graces the front of the cereal box. Next time you're crunching your Wheaties, read the box to learn more about the Flutie Foundation.

Class of 2010: Some may say this year's freshman class is a "perfect 10." That's just one of the creative ways the members of the class of 2010 are branding their unique year. These Eagles who "take action" also go by "the dimes," 2010, 20-10, and 0-10.

STEVE IRWIN, R.I.P. We'll miss the amicable Crocodile Hunter, who was killed by a stingray Monday. But we still have great memories of his adventures, and continue to be inspired by his bold and daring attempts to befriend wildlife.

Thumbs Down

FACEBOOK'S UPDATE: Christmas came early for creepy Facebook stalkers this week. But for everyone else, the updated look with "News Feeds" and "Mini Feeds" seems like the downfall of their favorite procrastination and social networking tool. If you happen to break up with your significant other tomorrow, don't worry about having to tell everyone, because everyone will already know.

THE RAT'S NEW MENU: What happened to the greasy food? The Rat's new fare includes sandwiches and salads. It's hard to give a thumbs down to eating healthy, but why else would you go to the Rat than to eat the burgers and fries?

SPEEDING BUS: People are always warning you about the Fung Wah bus from Boston to New York. Sure it's cheap, but safe? Tuesday's accident in Auburn, Mass. proved them right, when a bus driver sped down an off ramp and his bus rolled over. Next time splurge on the extra $5 and go Greyhound.

THAT CLOSED COURSE: No matter how many times a day you check the course offerings on Agora, that one class that you really want to take is still closed. No overrides allowed this time. It looks like you're just going to have to wait until next year to take it.
