Chris Miller, A&S '09, is not just a face in the crowd. If you're a freshman or sophomore, Chris is the cool, funny orientation leader who helped you get through those first few days when you got a taste of the Boston College experience (note: BC experience does not include living quarters as nice as Vandy or 90). The proud Long Island (Baldwin-Nassau County, to be exact) native is a big fan of seafood and, of course, Daft Punk - the two pretty much go hand-in-hand. Chris is no elusive character around BC; among his other commitments, he is the co-director of FACES. My prime cause is...
The student organization FACES is anti-racism through education and dialogue. We want to get people out of their comfort zones to talk and interact with each other about issues that matter. Hopefully through that we can all see the world and the people in it a little differently and go out and make some positive impact once we leave this place.
I am passionate about this cause because...
For a while, it defined my experience here in a negative way. When I came in, I didn't feel like I "belonged." I looked around, saw a lot of things I didn't like, heard a lot of things I was offended by, but I felt like I had no one to discuss them with. Finding FACES was a great way to hear other people's stories and get a different perspective on BC by knowing I wasn't alone with what I felt. FACES has been my support network in more ways than I can ever explain. Without the people in the organization - our faculty advisor Dr. Albert, my fellow co-directors, and the entire council as a whole - I would probably be at a much different place than I am now. What I've learned from the organization and the council are lessons I'll take with me for the rest of my life. The type of values you want your kids to grow up with, you know?
If I could ask BC students to do one thing...
I would ask them to take a chance on something different. Go to events you would never normally go to. Grab lunch with someone you normally don't hang out with. Speak up when you would normally stay silent. Just take risks, the rewards are always so much more gratifying.
With my work I just hope to...
Push our cause forward little by little. We don't think we're going to end racism, sexism, homophobia, etc. in four years, six years, even 10 years. But every bit counts, whether it's standing up against someone or something you see in your residence hall that's an act of bigotry, or becoming a policy maker one day and really changing the fabric of society. But people need to know it exists in order to have a chance of changing it. Education is empowerment. It's like The Matrix. We're trying to give out red pills to the people.
In 10 years I see myself...
Still happy. That's the only thing I can ask for.
My choice news sources are...
The New York Times and The Boy Genius Report.
