'Tina or Sarah?'
I've always loved Tina Fey, but lately I've fallen into a deeper love with her than ever before. Over the last three weekends, she has been on hand to open each episode of SNL by spoofing Alaska governor and vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin. Watching her is a surreal experience, because she not only sounds exactly like her, she also looks like her long-lost twin. As I sit in front of the screen and view Fey, I forget every time that what I'm watching is fake. It seems like she is the real Palin. (Although to give Palin credit, she is not that spacey.)
Perhaps the highlight of Fey's performance came this past weekend in a parody of the presidential debate. While due credit certainly goes to the skits entire writing team, the moment when Fey pulled out a flute and started to play for the talent portion of the debate was laugh-out-loud hilarious. If you haven't seen this or her other skits, log on to SNL's official site to check them out.
With the show gaining such a ratings boost from its election coverage, rumors have been circulating this week that Palin may, in fact, make a guest appearance on the show this weekend. I can only imagine the possibilities. Who wouldn't want to see Palin play Fey alongside her?
'And now a rant on leggings'
I digress from Tina Fey to offer up my feelings on the subject of leggings, which I feel are currently the most heinously misused piece of clothing in fashion. In class today, I was so distracted by one fellow student's unfortunate use of leggings that I could not concentrate. I wanted to help her.
So, I offer you this to remember: Leggings are not, nor were they ever, pants. They serve the same function as tights - to cover up legs for warmth or to be worn under a short skirt or dress to provide some modesty. Women these days seem to think that they are an acceptable alternative to pants, wearing them with short blouses or button-down shirts.
If you're not going to the gym or to dance class, we don't want to see all that leggings reveal. They draw attention to the wrong parts of your body and are sleazy. They look cheap - it looks like you didn't have enough money to spend on pants. And, it's just not cool. Walking around campus is not the same as being in one of Madonna's music videos.
The ultimate leggings abuse: wearing them with Uggs.
So, think twice. Be trendy and wear pants.
