It was a feel-good night last Wednesday at Boston's Avalon Ballroom, where Florida natives Sister Hazel rocked the 2,500-person crowd in attendance. After a relaxed opening set by the fellow Pat McGee Band, Sister Hazel took the stage opening with its hit song "Change Your Mind." The guitar-based quintet moved smoothly through their set list, highlighting lead singer Ken Block's vocals through songs such as "Your Mistake," "Swan Dive," "Strange Cup of Tea," and "Mandolin Moon" from their hit new album Absolutely, which contains several of their songs from the night. A highlight of the evening came when the band played "Your Winter," which has received much success from its place on the soundtrack from the movie 10 Things I Hate About You.
The band brought its classically catchy '70s sound to the Avalon, singing about its standard upbeat views on life and love. Sister Hazel's pop-rock sound pleased the Wednesday night crowd of Boston "Hazelnuts," despite a few minor miscues with the sound system in the beginning of the performance. Throughout the show guitarist Ryan Newell ripped through several stunning solos that added depth to Ken Block's live vocal performance of its album hits. After leading a crowd sing-along of perhaps Hazel's biggest hit "All For You," the band would have left the Boston crowd with everything they had asked for. The band returned, however, with an encore of several more songs while dressed in new outfits - Boston Celtics jerseys - leaving the crowd of loyal fans with its upbeat classic "Superman," after performing another quality show for its expanding population of Boston fans.
