Big City 138 Brighton Ave. Allston (617) 782-2020 Open Mon. - Fri. 12 p.m. -1 a.m., Sat. - Sun., 11 a.m. - 1 a.m.

Looking for an escape from the usual Harvard Avenue bar scene? If the Kells is becoming too familiar and Kinvara isn't offering you anything new, try out Big City, located at the corner of Harvard and Brighton Avenues.

This bar offers a nice alternative to people who want to get out of a rut at the bar scene, but don't want the hassle of going into Boston.

Big City is a great place to come whether you're with a couple of buddies or with a whole group of friends. Its main draw is in its abundant pool tables. The back room has so many pool tables that you almost never need to wait to play.

Considering how well-kept the tables are, the cost of $10 an hour is very reasonable. No shabby cues or worn table greens can be found; the tables are as high quality as the bar. The place is a pool-lover's dream.

The bar is very well-stocked and offers more than 80 beers on tap. Unsure of what to get? The friendly wait staff will be happy to offer suggestions on what the best options are. The bartenders are very well knowledgeable about all the alcohol that they serve, and they will even give you a pointer or two on how to make that Goldschlager shot extra effective.

The prices for beers are more expensive than the typical college bar, but the mixed drinks price range rivals that of any Harvard Avenue bar. Want to get the most bang for your buck? Begin with pitchers (fills four glasses) of sangria for $10 and the evening will get a good jump start.

If beer is more your style, order a table tap, and you can enjoy uninterrupted games at the pool tables without frequent visits to the bar. Big City's extensive menu also offers a wide range of pizzas and nacho platters. The food is tasty and is worth the extra bucks. It perfectly complements the wide variety of drinks.

Big City does a good job catering to all crowds, as the college student and the working 20-somethings can all come and have a good time. If you bring a large group of friends, Big City offers the private pool room. Spend a few extra bucks, and you are treated to full waiter service, a room with several chairs and couches, and a nice private space to play pool and hang out with your friends.

Big City earns its reputation as everything in the place is big: the beers, the food, the pool tables, and the eventual bill. If you don't mind spending a few extra bucks, try Big City. This fun hangout spot in Allston is worth the wait.
