Bar Review: Foggy Goggle

Foggy Goggle is a strange bar. That would be the first thing that would strike anyone when entering the doors on Boylston; Foggy Goggle is strange.

Strange, however, does not necessarily mean that it cannot be fun. In fact, Foggy Goggle is an entertaining experience, to say the least.

Half the fun is just "people-watching." Foggy Goggle's décor is the first thing to catch your eye. Thought bubbles line the walls, as do faces of people who seem famous but may, in fact, not be. The bar itself is what the retail stores Oop! or Funusual would look like if they added a nightspot.

There is a long hall where people either talk or occasionally bust dance moves. There is a small basement level where people can dance or hangout, however, this is far from a dance club.

The crowd has a wide age range. There are 21-year-olds and 51-year-olds. There are the casual J. Crew crowd and the Hot Topic pack. While the crowd tends to skew toward the younger side rather than the older, there is no definite crowd type at Foggy Goggle - which is part of its charm.

The signature drink at Foggy Goggle sticks with the oddball theme; fruity mixed drinks that are served in full-sized fishbowls. Other than that, the drinks are generally standard, with a few offbeat beer choices such as Hefeweizen.

All of the bartenders are beautiful, model-looking women, who are not just there to be eye candy- they are some of the fastest pouring bartenders in Boston. The food at Foggy Goggle strays from the oddball theme. Burgers, fries, and other typical bar food are nothing strange or special. The food is delivered slowly, is not the tastiest, and the prices are generally average.

One big draw is the Bar Frog promotions that happen occasionally. Saturday nights are often free mixed drinks night between 9:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. It's strange to sum up Foggy Goggle. It would not seem surprising to see people actually wearing goggles there someday.

The one thing that seems true is that Foggy Goggle is not like a truly complete night, unless you want to go out for only an hour. It is a good place to start off the night or to do in conjunction with the Pour House (which boasts better food and drink prices, but worse atmosphere and service). I definitely recommend trying Foggy Goggle. You may not love it, you may not hate it, but you will surely find it odd. That's a good thing.
