Kings 10 Scotia St. Boston (617) 266-2695 Open daily, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
King's is more than just your typical bar. It's an entertainment complex in the same vein as Jillian's. Besides the bars within King's, there are also pool tables and a very modern bowling alley.
There are several bars in King's, including one in both the bowling alley and the pool hall. There's also the DeVille Lounge, an 85-seat restaurant and bar. The atmosphere is fun and energetic, with music from the Beatles, to Beck, to Green Day, to Aerosmith blasting in the background. Black lights surround the bowling alley and the décor is modern with a bit of a retro vibe.
The drinks at King's are split into the classics, which is your typical drink selection, and the new classics, which feature more specialty drinks such as the "big ball bowl for two." The mixed drinks, though not cheap, are appealing. The large beer list includes $3 Budweiser and Miller Lite drafts.
The food menu is a big surprise, with items ranging closer to gourmet than stereotypical bar food. This also means a hike in price, but one that's accompanied by a hike in quality.
Appetizers include duck spring rolls, fried calamari, and chicken wings. There are salads and gourmet pizzas available, as well as entrees such as sirloin steak and grilled salmon. The desserts are also a real find, like the delicious pumpkin cake, and King's specialty, a Guinness float with King's homemade ice cream.
The full menu is available late into the evening (usually 11 p.m. during the week, midnight on weekends) with pizza offered until later. To gauge the high prices, a basket of fries is $5. This is not a money-saving bar.
Bowling is one of the real draws. Sixteen AMF lanes boost state-of-the-art graphics and automatic scoring. There is full food and drink service right at the lanes, and the upbeat staff is approachable and available. Eight pool tables are also available complete with full food and drink service.
There are two events at King's worth noting. Tuesday nights are ladies' nights, with ladies bowling free after 8 p.m. Sundays are NFL action days with $3 drafts, 25 cent wings, and $1 pizzas.
King's is definitely a fun experience for both the underage and 21-plus (though the under-21 crowd needs to be in before 6 p.m.). The bar can get crowded, so if you are looking for a casual, fun night out, go during the week. If you've got some spare cash and are looking for a good time, you will be fit for King's.
