Legend has it there is an illegal, cross-country road race that takes place in the United States - and the winner earns a cool million dollar paycheck. Is this a common legend? Is it something that people sit around campfires for, telling stories of mysterious deaths, and mysterious millionaires? Personally, I had never heard of this race until Fox decided to air a drama about it, called Drive.

The premise of the show is unique - an unknown group of people calls on men and women of diverse backgrounds to compete in this cross-country trek. The back stories are even more interesting. In order to coerce Alex Tully, the main character, into participating, his wife is kidnapped. A woman, Karina, jumps into the car with him in order to join the race and to find answers, as her parents died in this race because they were trying to save her, just as Alex is trying to save his wife.

Another character, Wendy Patracus, is running away from her belligerent husband. She wants the money to make a good life for her and her newborn son Sammy. After a myriad of obstacles, she comes in last after the first day. To redeem herself, she is told to kill one of her fellow competitors. One can gather from this request that this is not just a drag race across country, but a strategic, almost chess-like game. Wendy probably did not pass that test then, since the woman she was supposed to kill became her partner in crime.

All in all, I would say that Drive is worth a look. The intrigue that surrounds this race outweighs the possible shortcomings in acting and dialogue, although there are quite a few minor characters that provide great comic relief. The important thing is that the show does not take itself too seriously, but still presents key questions the audience will want to come back for.
