BC Tube: 'Grey' Matters

Every year, the MTV Movie Awards celebrate the best kisses that occurred in film the previous year, but I contend that great TV kisses are even more satisfying. Was I happy when Allie and Noah finally reunited with their grand display of affection? Absolutely. But did it compare to the pure elation felt when watching Ross and Rachel kiss in the rain at the door of Central Perk? No. That kiss was transcendent, and one that I often consider to be the best in TV.

There is one TV hookup that I think comes really close to beating out Ross and Rachel, though. It's not from a likely source - it's not from Carrie and Mr. Big, or Luke and Lorelai. It's not even from the most obvious couple on Grey's Anatomy. I consider the Season 2 hookup of Alex and Izzie one of the best I have ever seen. Alex enters Joe's in search of Izzie after a day of being chastised for not kissing her good night on their date the previous night. When he finds her, he lingers just long enough to pique her interest, and then throws her back on the bar stool and really gives it to her.

Other people who join me in this fandom are in for a treat, as it seems that Season 5 is setting us up for "Alex and Izzie: Version 2.0." The season premiere last week found Alex truly opening up to Izzie for the first time, and then becoming embarrassed when she spreads the word about his softening. It was not a kiss in a bar, but it was the first hint we've had of a reunion between the two since they broke up. Hopefully creator Shonda Rhimes will let Alex get over himself and finally go after the only woman at Seattle Grace he's ever truly wanted.

The Alex and Izzie news was by far the most exciting of the Season 5 premiere, although it appears as though the show may be getting back on track. Rhimes kept her promise of keeping Meredith and Derek together (thankfully the teaser showing Rose telling Derek about their unborn child was a sick joke). Cristina has her own love interest to dream about in the newest cast addition, the ruggedly handsome Dr. Hunt (Kevin McKidd). But all in all, Grey's Anatomy still isn't close to the hype it raised as the No. 1 show in the nation back in that fateful second season. Last week's premiere gave it a good basis, but Rhimes is going to have to work hard to shock and satisfy us the same was she did three years ago.
