Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are a dynamic duo in the uproarious film Baby Mama. The movie centers on Fey's character, Kate Holbrook, a successful businesswoman who believes that her life is missing one tiny thing - a baby. Unable to conceive a child herself, Kate decides to seek out a surrogate mother, and she finds Angie Ostrowiski, played by Poehler. The movie chronicles the unconventional relationship between the two women as they prepare in their own ways for the birth of a child.
High-strung and controlling Kate is taken aback by Angie's childish antics, but, as director and writer Michael McCullers put it, "If someone's having your baby, you can't get rid of them."
The movie hits its stride when Kate meets Rob Ackerman (Greg Kinnear), a local juice-bar owner who she begins dating. Having learned that her fertility issues could kill the mood, Kate keeps her surrogate mother a secret from Rob, something that creates tension and keeps the jokes coming.
Mama, which was released on DVD Tuesday, is a side-splitting comedy that showcases two of the funniest women in America. The chemistry between Poehler and Fey, who worked together on Saturday Night Live, makes the story believable. It is their comedy that makes the movie worth watching.
The DVD bonus features are a little unimpressive, but the movie is a simple comedy, so there isn't much for the features to explain. One of the features offers an alternate ending, an interesting take that shows more of the blended family that Kate finds herself in. The original ending focuses more on the rest of the characters and their lives.
The deleted scenes are definitely worth a view because they are hilarious. Be sure to check out the breastfeeding one. The featurette From Conception to Delivery: The Making of Baby Mama, is a bit of a love fest between Poehler and Fey, and there aren't many behind-the-scene insights. The "Legacy of Laughter" feature discusses the movie's SNL background, which, of course, includes Poehler and Fey, but also extends to the producer, writer, and director of Mama.
The movie itself is worth the purchase of the DVD because it truly showcases the comedic power of Fey and Poehler. If you're interested in secrets of the set and how camera angles were set up, the bonus features will likely disappoint you, but for the average viewer the DVD is worth the purchase. Baby Mama is a fun comedy that challenges the idea of a "true" family, and it does so in an extremely entertaining way. B
