Tucked away in Boston's North End, Lucia is a delightful option for those in need of an authentic Italian fix. A family-owned business in existence since 1977, it is clear that the tradition and heritage still play a big role in the decor, menu, and service.
Upon arriving at Lucia, it was clear that the service was top-notch when a worker immediately approached the car and offered complimentary valet parking, allowing us to avoid the hassle of parking on the streets of Boston, not to mention the winter chill.
When entering the restaurant, my eyes were immediately drawn to the elaborately designed and beautifully crafted ceilings, which made me feel as though I was in the next best thing to the Sistine Chapel. The lights were dimmed and soft music was playing, making the space feel cozy.
While the restaurant was bustling with patrons ranging from couples to business groups, our waitress was extremely attentive and helpful, making many personal menu recommendations.
We began with an order of bruschetta. It was served on warm Italian bread with a light coating of oil, tomatoes, mozzarella, and basil to top it off. The ingredients were remarkably fresh, especially given the season, and very affordable. (A serving for four was $6.50.)
Deciding on an entree was particularly difficult. Initially craving a traditional, hearty Italian meal, I was drawn to the classic offerings of spaghetti and meat sauce, lasagna, and fettuccini alfredo. Upon reviewing the rest of the extensive menu, however, I discovered that there were too many other unique offerings to choose something so basic. The restaurant offers a variety of entree selections of fish, chicken, and veal. For pasta dishes, they boasted everything from tortellini in cream sauce to seafood linguini; their specialty appeared to be gnocchi, which is small, potato-filled pasta prepared in either a pesto or marinara sauce.
My friend decided on the gnocchi in marinara, and, after much deliberation, I ultimately decided on the Pollo Del Saggittario, a chicken breast sauteed with white wine, asparagus, mushrooms, sun-dried tomatoes, artichoke hearts, and spices.
The gnocchi were beyond my highest expectations. They were light, clearly made fresh, and extremely tasty. The chicken dish was equally impressive. The meat was tender and the vegetables were fresh and seasoned to perfection. The sauce did not overwhelm the dish, but rather accentuated the flavors of the food itself. Best of all, both dishes were served in portions big enough to share.
Lucia offers delicious authentic Italian cooking at an affordable price, with accommodating and attentive service that only a family business can provide. I would absolutely recommend it for a nice dinner out with friends or even a romantic dinner with a loved one (Valentine's Day will be here before you know it). So next time you are headed into Boston, consider Lucia for an Italian meal that won't disappoint. A-
