As we get into the month of October, we as fashionistas are stuck in a time when the weather is at its "in between" stage. This stage is typified by chilly days, with the sun, wind, and rain always coming and going. It is a confusing time when many are not sure what to wear, especially on top, to keep them warm. The trick to staying chic during this time is to layer, which can also help bring to life old pieces of clothing and accessories. The idea of layering different styles together can be intimidating, but knowing the dos and don'ts will help you style yourself like a pro.

Luckily for us, October still offers us the opportunity to wear those last few summer shirts and dresses with a spin. If you decide to sport your short silk dress one more time, pick a cardigan to accompany it. Pick a thin sweater that fits your frame. Pairing a bulky dress under a bulky sweater takes away from the casualness, sophistication, and silhouette of the outfit. You always want to choose pieces that keep the look lean and compliment you. Color is important too, so don't shy away from mixing bold colors and textures. Mixing vibrant shades of a color with different texture helps simplify the layering effect and makes your outfit look effortless. Also, to play up to your figure, do not forget to add a belt. This quick add-on creates the instant effect of showing off your shape.

Another essential wardrobe item for this time is a versatile coat. In this weather a coat comes in handy, but that does not mean you need to pull your wool winter coat out of the closet. A coat that is fun, comfortable, and cozy is what you want to pick up. That is why you should think about investing in a cropped jacket. They come in a variety of colors, fabrics, and silhouettes to help flatter each and every body type. A great bottom for a cropped jacket is that summer skirt you would love to wear one more time. To keep the outfit looking lean, remember to keep the top a lighter fabric and longer than the jacket. This will keep the look balanced and sleek. This is also true if you wear jeans as your bottom base. If you decide to go for your favorite trouser jeans, pair them with a more form-fitting jacket and a cute lace top to make the look lean and feminine.

As this "in between" time will go as quickly as it came, remember to use it to your advantage. Take out those flirty summer shirts and dresses and pair them with a simple cropped jacket or a comfy long "grandpa" cardigan. Just don't forget when you layer to avoid the bulkiness of some fabric pieces. Contrasting proportions is crucial, and helps elongate each and every figure. Also, this is the best time to bring old items into a new perspective.

Lastly, listen to the rule of cool from Alessandra Brunialti, Banana Republic's vice president of women's design. "Layer sparingly so your look is effortlessly chic. Layer too much and it looks like you've tried too hard. Take the time to style each layer before adding the next one," she says.
