Cruise and Stiller play Hardy Boys
Remember Tom Cruise? You, know - Maverick, Jerry Maguire, the dude who equates psychiatry with Nazism because the guy who wrote Battlefield Earth uncovered this insidious conspiracy and revealed it to him in a mind-bendingly cosmic dream. Anyway, you probably do. That was a retorical question. The point is, Cruise has recently signed on to star in Hardy Boys with Ben Stiller, a man also known for channeling his neuroticism toward characters he portrays onscreen. A tale of these poor-man's Encyclopedia Browns tackling one last case after a three-decade hiatus, Hardy Boys picks up where the '70s pediatric sleuth series left off. With an average height of four feet between the "boys," studio execs are banking on no one noticing the difference.
Murphy's Norbit beats out Office Space
The Eddie Murphy Androgyny Train kept right on rolling last weekend, with Norbit, a heartwarming tale of a sassy, overweight sociopath who is far too comfortable with her prodigiously gargantuan size, raking in 33 million Jr. Bacon Cheeseburgers at the domestic box office. That is akin to $33 million. Just as a measure of comparison, Office Space amassed less than one-third of that ungodly sum over the course of its entire theatrical run. This makes for an interesting dichotomy, considering the fact that Office Space is one of the funniest films ever made, while Norbit has elicited the following less-than-stellar reviews on Rottentomatoes.com:
"It's a thoughtless, cancerous, viral, irresponsible pollu-tion whose existence speaks ill of the society that produced it and of any society that would endorse or defend it."
"Big Momma's House 2 was better."
Indiana back next Memorial Day
The highly anticipated Indiana Jones 4: Indiana Jones and that Damn Arthritic Hip (because Harrison Ford is old, get it?) might face some serious box office competition upon its release next year.
According to movies.com, IJ4, Speed Racer and Iron Man are all slated to open around Memorial Day of 2008, rendering it the biggest weekend for nerds across the country since World of Warcraft hit the shelves and Hot Topic put all of its "Keep staring, I might do a trick" shirts on sale.
