Crossing the Quad last Thursday, the 21-plus crowd was literally shouting about the beginning of the Boston College Pub Series. There was so much enthusiasm - all for one evening of drinking in the Rat. If everyone would be there, and Boston College was actually going to serve alcohol on campus affordably, why not attend?

The evening held potential, as my Dad would always rave about his evenings in the Rat after a BC victory over Holy Cross. Times have changed, but there is always the possibility of a throwback.

I arrived at the Rat, excited to see what awaited me. First of all, there was bright lighting. I am all for turning on lights, but in an environment like this, less lighting would have been preferred. It still had the feel of the Rat that serves sandwiches from a fridge, not the Rat that has beer on tap. Then, there was the monstrous line to buy booze. It was probably at least 75 people long, and moved at the pace of a snail. Finally, the food was just about gone when I arrived at 7:15 p.m., only 45 minutes after the event started. Haven't people learned college kids will go anywhere for free food? While the logistics were not the best, it was still an enjoyable evening, saved by the great music selection. A combo of recent hits and classic favorites floated from the speakers, enhancing the atmosphere.

The beer was cold, they had decent selection, and I got to drink Guinness in the same building that I have class. While the effort was there, it was clear that the organizers had planned for low attendance. Don't underestimate the number of students who will show up to drink on campus; it's such an alluring idea. Perhaps the next one will be better. Perhaps it will have tequila. C
