If for some reason you didn't know Gwen Ifill, exectuvie producer and moderator of PBS's Washington Week in Review, you sure do now, following last Thursday's vice presidential debate, which was the highest-rated one in history. Ifill's job as moderator had its fair share of controversy, as her first book, The Breakthrough: Politics and Race in the Age of Obama, which is to be released on Inauguration Day, has a lot riding on this presidential election.

Ifill's resume begins in newspapers, including the The New York Times. From there, she served as chief political correspondent at NBC News until she began working for PBS, where she also serves as the senior correspondent for NewsHour with Jim Lehrer.

Ifill may clearly be biased (and not necessarily in the right way), but in the debate she managed to hold her neutrality. Ifill was not afraid to call out each candidate for not answering her questions. And more than that her witty quips, such as when she applauded each candidate for their answers to the education problem ("Everyone gets extra credit for this debate.") provided a great balance to the intense tone of the evening.
