It was a disappointing weekend for the women's volleyball team, as it dropped two road ACC games to the Virginia Cavaliers and the Virginia Tech Hokies. Boston College fell to 5-9 overall and 0-5 in conference play.
Coming into the weekend the Eagles were on a three-game losing streak, having lost their first three conference games to Maryland, Miami, and Florida State.
The Eagles first traveled to Charlottesville to take on the Cavaliers on Friday night, falling 3-0 (30-17, 30-24, 31-29). BC was led by sophomore Abigail Hasebroock, who contributed 17 kills, two blocks, two digs, and a .250 hitting percentage. Fellow sophomore Kelsey Johnson also had a strong game with seven kills, two blocks, and a .250 hitting percentage. Overall, the Eagles had a team hitting percentage of .118.
The Cavaliers overpowered the visiting team in the first game, but there were signs of hope for the Eagles in the following two. In the second, BC was up 23-21, but the opposition scored eight consecutive points. In the last of three games, BC led 27-25, but could not hold on. UVA seemed to have the edge down the stretch in each game, a common theme in each match.
UVA was led by Sarah Kirkwood and Lindsay Osco, who combined for 29 kills and a .434 hitting percentage. It improved to 7-5 overall and 2-1 in ACC action following this match.
In the second of back-to-back road games, the Eagles traveled to Blacksburg to take on the Hokies. Unfortunately BC dropped another crucial conference match 3-0 (30-21, 30-24, 30-27).
The Eagles were again led by Hasbroock, and Morgan Woodcock who each contributed 11 kills. Woodcock also added two blocks while her teammate contributed one. Kristin Kenney had a season high 20 digs on the night and co-captain Allison Anderson also added nine digs and five kills along with a service ace. Senior Verena Rost led the team with 33 assists, in addition to four digs and two kills.
In the first game the Hokies only led 23-21, but went on a seven point run to close out the game. Game two was the same as Tech led 25-23 before closing out the game. This was again the case in the last game as the Eagles stayed close, trailing only 28-27, until an Eagle service error and block assists from the opposition gave the Hokies a win.
Virginia Tech improved to 6-6 overall and 2-2 in conference play. Next up for the Hokies is in-state rival UVA on Tuesday.
The Eagles had many chances to turn games around this weekend, but down the stretch they had trouble competing with their opposition. As evident, each game was close, but unfortunately BC could not seal a win.
The Eagles look to turn things around as they travel to South Carolina to take on the Clemson Tigers on Friday and wrap up the weekend Saturday against Georgia Tech.
