After falling behind in the early going, the Eagles went on an offensive tear to cruise past the Northeastern Huskies Wednesday at Fraser Field in Lynn, 13-6. The Eagles will take on the University of Massachusetts in the Beanpot final this Wednesday at Fenway Park.
Things did not start as the Eagles hoped they would, as Northeastern jumped out to the early lead. Tony DiCesare led off the game with a base hit through the left side of the infield. DiCesare moved over to second on a wild pitch from starter Pat Dean and scored on a single down the right-field line by first baseman Mike Tamsin.
In the third, the Huskies extended their lead to 3-0. DiCesare doubled to left-center field to score David Gustafson. Tamsin soon singled through the right side to bring DiCesare home.
The Eagles began their scoring in the fourth. Eric Campbell singled and then advanced to second on a wild pitch by Huskies pitcher Ryan Quigley. Shortstop Garrett Smith knocked Campbell in with a single down the right-field line to make the score, 3-1.
BC scored three runs and took the lead in the top of the fifth, 4-3. Marc Perdios scored on a double down the left-field line by David Laufer. Laufer and Barry Butera would both soon score on a two-run single from Campbell.
Northeastern quickly tied the score at four. Chris Guillemette singled to start the inning and quickly moved over to third. A Tasmin sacrifice fly to left field brought Guillemette home.
Boston College took the lead for good in the seventh. Campbell recorded his third RBI of the game when his double knocked in Michael Belfiore. Tony Sanchez singled up the middle, and then scored on a wild pitch.
BC added an additional four runs in the eighth and another three in the ninth to seal the victory. Northeastern tried for a desperation comeback in the ninth, but only managed to score three runs.
The Eagles finished with 14 hits and nine walks, forcing the Huskies to use five different pitchers on the afternoon.
On his 21st birthday, Campbell was the catalyst for the Eagles. He finished the day 3-4, with three RBIs. Matt Hamlet also enjoyed a three-hit game, collecting three doubles and two RBIs.
Dean's start was the first of his collegiate career. He went 4.2 innings with three strikeouts. Geoff Oxley (1-1) earned his first win of the season in relief, working 2.1 innings of relief with two strikeouts.
