The Boston College Eagles baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader on Friday against No. 1 Florida State. The Seminoles won the first game, 8-6, and completed the doubleheader sweep with a 4-3 victory in game two.
Senior Terry Doyle (3-4) allowed seven runs in six innings and got the loss in the first game, as the Eagles failed to capitalize on six Seminole errors. Freshman Mickey Wiswall had a standout day for BC at the plate, going six-for-nine with two doubles, three runs, and three RBIs in the two games.
Outfielder Tyler Holt led off the game with a double for Florida State before scoring on a sacrifice fly by Jack Rye.
The Seminoles loaded the bases in the second, but Doyle worked out of a two-out jam and limited the 'Noles to one run on the inning.
In the fourth, Florida State scored four more on five hits. Tommy Oravetz doubled off the right-field fence, and after Ohmed Danesh walked and Stuart Tapley flew out, Holt knocked his second double of the game to score two. Jason Stidham followed with an RBI single to left. Catcher Buster Posey lined a double to right, and Jack Rye earned his second RBI on an infield single to make it 6-0.
The Eagles responded by tagging Seminole ace Matt Fairel (8-0) for five runs on four hits in the bottom half of the inning. The five runs were the most Fairel had allowed in a game all season.
Sophomore Tony Sanchez started the rally with a single to left field. Eric Campbell and Garrett Smith drew back-to-back walks to load the bases for Wiswall, who drove in two runs on a single to center. Hamlet reloaded the bases for the Eagles with a single to left, and Fairel uncorked a wild pitch to score Smith. Freshman outfielder Marc Perdios then hit a two-out, two-RBI single to pull the Eagles within one.
After a scoreless fifth inning from both squads, FSU pushed across a run in the sixth on an RBI double from Posey.
BC added a run in the sixth to make the score 7-6 in favor of the Seminoles. Wiswall lined a base hit to right field and advanced to second on a miscue by Rye, before scoring on a Sam Shaughnessy sacrifice fly.
Eric Campbell just missed tying the game in the seventh when he smashed a pitch from FSU reliever Jimmy Marshall down the left-field line, but the ball hooked foul. The Seminoles kept the Eagles off the scoreboard and held onto their one-run advantage.
In the eighth, the Eagles loaded the bases again. Wiswall started the frame with a single to center, his fourth hit of the game. Hamlet attempted to sacrifice Wiswall to second, but a Seminoles fielder misplayed the bunt, allowing both players to be safe on the play. BC loaded the bases with two outs, but Marshall retired Belfiore on a ground out to end the threat.
Posey gave the Seminoles a two-run cushion in the ninth with his 10th home run of the season.
Seminoles' reliever Ryan Strauss pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his first save of the season.
In game two, Rye hit a solo homer off BC reliever Chris Kowalski to break a 3-3 tie in the eighth inning and seal the victory for the Seminoles.
Junior Dan Houston pitched seven strong innings in a no-decision for BC, allowing three runs on six hits while striking out eight.
The Eagles scored a run off three hits in the bottom of the first. Belfiore and Tony Sanchez hit consecutive one-out singles to start the rally, and Wiswall hit an RBI single to right to give BC the early lead.
FSU tied the game and then took a 2-1 lead in the second. Tommy Oravetz hit an RBI triple to right field before Stuart Tapley plated him on an RBI single. Houston escaped the inning without further damage when he got Buster Poley to pop out with the bases loaded.
In the fourth, BC scored two runs off two hits. Wiswall recorded his sixth hit of the afternoon with a double to left and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Hamlet.
John Spatola followed with a RBI triple down the right-field line and would score on a sac fly by Shaughnessy to retake the lead, 3-2.
FSU knotted the score, 3-3, in the fifth on an RBI single to left field by Rye.
In the top of the eighth, Rye broke a 3-3 tie with a solo blast to right field off BC reliever Chris Kowalski.
The Seminoles loaded the bases in the ninth on two hits and a walk off reliever Nick Asselin.
First baseman Belfiore relieved Asselin on the mound, retiring Rye on a fly ball to end the inning.
