The No. 14 women's Boston College soccer team beat No. 13 Wake Forest, 1-0, Sunday afternoon in Winston-Salem, N.C., in the Eagles' second ACC match-up of the season.

With the win, the Eagles improve to 7-1-2 overall and 1-0-1 in the ACC, their only loss at the hands of Stanford on Aug. 31. The loss was Wake Forest's second of the season.

Scoreless through the first half, the tie was broken by BC sophomore Amy Caldwell three minutes into the second half at 48:42, the only goal of the game. After stealing the ball from a Wake Forest defender, Caldwell beat the Demon Deacons' goalkeeper, Laura Morse, from 13 yards out on the right side. The goal was Caldwell's second of the season.

Boston College goalkeeper Jillian Mastroianni earned the shutout with two saves and has not allowed a goal in the past two games, shutting out No. 9 Duke in a 0-0 tie on Sept. 25.

"Going into the weekend we knew we had a great test ahead of us, as we were playing No. 9 and No. 13 in the country on the road. To have two quality opponents in such a short time is a lot to prepare for and I am really proud of how our girls responded this weekend," said Coach Kulik. "To come out of this weekend with four points in the ACC and unscored upon is a great start for the ACC conference play."

The Eagles outshot the Demon Deacons, 10-8. Boston College also had 14 fouls to Wake Forest's 10 and had seven corner kicks to Wake's three.

Sophomore Brooke Knowlton and freshman Julia Bouchelle each had three shots in the game. "I think what separates our team from most is on any given day someone different could be the player of the match," Coach Kulik said. "It is impossible to key in on one player because someone else on the team will step up and cause you problems.

"As I said, I felt this weekend was a testament to the quality of the depth on our roster. But if I had to pick out a few players I would say our goalie, Jill Mastroianni, having two shutouts; outstanding, and an excellent weekend in goal for us. Senior captain Caroline Walden kept us organized and solid in the back. Kelly Henderson and Chelsea Regan were dynamic in the central midfield. Brooke Knowlton was a handful up top and Amy Caldwell had an excellent second half against Wake and scored a great goal."

As six ACC teams are ranked in the top 15 nationally, the Eagles face a challenging road ahead.

The Eagles have their ACC home opener versus the Miami Hurricanes tonight at 7 p.m. Regarding the rest of the season, Kulik said, "I feel good about our talent and the improvements we continue to make; hopefully we are playing our best soccer at the end of the season and if that is the case and we remain healthy, we could surprise a few people."
