Walk into Conte. Take a deep breath. Now watch the vapor plume outward as you slowly exhale. It's hockey season, and there couldn't be a better feeling in the world for the Boston College Superfan. This fan is unlike many other college hockey fans. This fan supports a team that won the 2008 national championship, a team that is currently ranked No. 1 in the country prior to the onset of the 2008-2009 season. This fan is looking forward to another great year of Eagles hockey.
How will the Eagles kick off the new season? On Friday Oct. 10, the BC hockey team will raise its 2008 national championship banner prior to playing the University of Wisconsin. It may not be Jackie Moon's Flint, Michigan Megabowl, but it certainly will rival its epic capacity. The doors will open at 5:30 p.m., and all those who arrive early will have the chance to participate in a trivia for signed prizes from the championship team. Not to mention, the first 5,000 fans will receive a free replica of the banner. Following warm-ups, the athletic's department along with its new student group, Eagle Ops, will turn off the lights in Conte and replay the last 10 minutes of the championship game on the video boards. After a brief light show and a few words from head coach Jerry York, the Eagles will face off against the Badgers to begin the season. The BC hockey Superfan couldn't dream of a better way to start a season.
There is no reason to wait until Friday to get excited, though. Monday at 5:30 p.m., the hockey team, along with coaches and staff, will be taking its annual team photo. For the first time in recent history, the team has invited students to join in the photo. Superfans will have the unique opportunity to not only appear in the backdrop of every team poster that will be distributed at all the home games but also meet and greet the players and coaches. Additionally, several lucky students will have the chance to win tickets to Virginia Tech, Clemson, and Notre Dame football games, as well as tickets to the men's hockey game versus Boston University.
As if being in a picture with the team wasn't enough, Superfans will have yet another opportunity to "breathe hockey" this week. Monday through Thursday, leading into Friday's game and banner-hanging ceremony, BCTV will air the championship game on Channel 52 at 2:30 and 10:30 p.m. So, get out your popcorn and hit the couch one night this week to relive the Eagles victory over the Fighting Irish.
The experiences of the upcoming week are truly unique to every Superfan, regardless of age: a chance to be in the annual hockey team photo, time to relive the 2008 national title match, the 2008 championship-banner-hanging ceremony, and the BC Eagles' home opener against the University of Wisconsin. n
