Several members of the Boston College women's tennis team were selected to participate in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Women's Eastern Regional Championship held at Virginia Tech in the Burrows/Burleson Tennis Center over the weekend. Six players in all were chosen, a number not reached by the Eagles in recent years.
Unfortunately, sophomore Szilvia Szegedi and senior Allison Ashley could not participate due to injury. That left only four Eagles able to make to the trip to Blacksburg, Va.
Freshman Lindsey Nash, and juniors Nida Waseem and Morgan Landes all competed in singles matches.
Senior co-captain Emily Hellberg competed in doubles with Waseem as her partner. Landes and Nash also teamed up for doubles play.
Saturday, Waseem dropped her third-round match to the tournament's top-seeded competitor, Candace Fuchs of William and Mary, 6-0, 6-4. As the 17th-seeded player in the competition, Waseem, the highest-seeded Eagle, received a bye in the first round of 128. Alison Hasmall of Princeton defeated Millena Matijevic of Niagra to earn a spot as Waseem's first opponent. She won her first match 6-3, 7-6 (1), improving her overall singles record for the year to 4-3. She was the only member of the team to make it past the second round.
Nash's first-round victory set up a match against the tourney's third-seeded Megan Muth, also of William and Mary. Saturday morning, Nash fell to Muth, 6-4, 6-2.
She won her first-round match on Friday, defeating Virgina Commonwealth's Cristina Gago, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4. After this weekend, her overall singles record stands at 7-3 for the fall. The freshman has recorded the most victories of anyone on the team thus far this season.
The Eagles' woes against William and Mary competitors continued later on Saturday, when Landes lost her second-round match to the Virginia College's Kate Boomershine, 6-3, 6-1. Landes had won Friday's match against Army's Marissa Limsiaco 6-3, 6-7 (0), 6-1.
In doubles competition, Pennsylvania's Chao/Shweky duo defeated the Eagles' Hellberg/Waseem team, 8-2 in Saturday's second round. The tandem had earned its spot in the second round with a win over Rutgers' Link/Weckstein, 8-3. The Chao/Shweky pair had defeated UMBC's Kaasalainen/Khvalina team on Friday.
