Cross country does well in Minnesota
The men's and women's cross country teams competed in the annual Roy Griak Invitational hosted by the University of Minnesota on Saturday, placing 24th and ninth respectively. This came after third and fourth place finishes, respectively, at the Quinnipiac Invitational on Friday.
On Saturday, sophomore Patrick Mellea was the men's team leader as he finished the course in just over 25 minutes to place 89th overall. Captain Mark Alizzi finished second on the BC team, just 11 seconds behind Mellea with a time of 25:59.
Senior co-captain Laurel Burdick was the women's top finisher, placing seventh overall out of 287 runners. She finished the course in 21:09. Maria Cicero, a three time All-American, was the second BC finisher with a time of 21:43, good for 20th place. Kathleen Smyth, Jessica Flinn, and Anne Hessberg placed 65th, 71st, and 72nd, respectively.

Maryland defense does the trick
Maryland took out Wake Forest 22-12 on Saturday behind a solid defensive effort with the help of a 20-yard touchdown off a fumble recovery by Josh Wilson. The win gave Maryland seven straight against the Demon Deacons.
The Terrapins' Keon Lattimore rushed for 76 yards on the ground and scored the team's only offensive touchdown. On the other side, Wake Forest's Chris Barclay ran for 86 yards and a touchdown. The Deacons never led in the game as they fell behind early in the first half 13-0 and couldn't muster up enough to come back against the Maryland defense. Coming into the game, the Terrapins were ranked last in the league for rushing defense while Wake Forest was first in rushing yards. That changed in this game, however, as Maryland held the Deacons to 111 yards rushing.
Tar Heels win battle of the Carolinas
The game was more than just an ACC showdown - a battle of neighboring schools. North Carolina came out on top as they beat their rivals, North Carolina State, 31-24.
The key to the Tar Heels victory was the re-emergence of its running game. In its two losses to start the season it put up only 118 yards. That changed in a hurry in this game as Barrington Edwards ran for a career high 129 yards and a touchdown, including a 62-yard rush on the second play of the game.
Despite the first half success on the ground, Tar Heel quarterback Matt Baker was a problem as he completed just one pass in nine attempts for three yards in the first half, but then went 13-27 overall in the game with 177 yards and two touchdowns.
NC State freshman Toney Baker rushed for two touchdowns and quarterback Jay Davis connected for one of his own, but it wasn't enough for the win.
Vick leads pounding of Georgia Tech
Both teams were looking for their fourth straight win, but No. 4 Virginia Tech stepped up their game in a big way and routed No. 15 Georgia Tech 51-7. Marcus Vick led the Hokies with a career-best 223 yards and a touchdown. Twenty-one points were scored by the Hokie defense and special teams, including a 78-yard blocked field goal return by D.J. Parker.
The lone touchdown pass from Vick came on a 13-yard reception by tight end Jeff King. Mike Imoh and Cedric Humes both rushed for touchdowns and Hokie kicker Brandon Pace knocked three through the uprights. The only score for the Yellow Jackets came when quarterback Reggie Ball connected with Calvin Johnson on third down for a 59 yards and then hit him again in the end zone from 11 yards out. Ball finished 11 for 27 with 143 yards.
Miami nearly shuts out Colorado
No. 12 Miami got the break it was looking for, nearly shutting out Colorado 23-3 behind 264 yards from quarterback Kyle Wright and the sniffling Hurricane defense.
Wright completed 20 of 39 passes and ran for a two-yard touchdown. After being sacked 14 times in Miami's first two games, the quarterback wasn't dropped once against Colorado. He connected with Sinorice Moss for 111 yards, including a 53-yard touchdown.
Miami's Quadtrine Hill and Tyrone Moss combined for 99 yards on the ground and Jon Peattie helped out with three field goals.
Colorado's Mason Crosby's 58-yard field goal with 11:57 left was the only thing that kept his team from being shut out for the first time since 1988. Despite the lone score, though, the Buffaloes managed 331 total yards and quarterback Joel Klatt completed 25 of 41 passes for 228 yards. The problems were the 16 penalties for 104 yards, the three turnovers, and the team's inefficiency inside the red zone.

Irish beat former coach Willingham
Charlie Weis' Fighting Irish beat the Washington Huskies 36-17 on Saturday, raising the Irish's record to 6-0 against the Huskies. The game ended as a nostalgic rendezvous for many Notre Dame players as it reunited them once again with their old coach, Tyrone Willingham, who was fired at the conclusion of the 2004 season. Nevertheless, it was only a year ago that Willingham led the Irish to a 38-3 win over the Huskies in South Bend, Ind.
The Irish took advanatage of several Huskies' mistake to get the win. Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn threw for 327 yards and aided sophomore halfback Darius Walker to rush a career-high of 128 yards through 21 carries. Walker became Notre Dame's first running back to rush more than 100 yards in his first four season games. Quinn also rushed 29 yards and hit wide receiver Jeff Samardzija for a career-high 164 yards.
No. 9 Lousiville crushed by USF
By looking at the game's score, 45-14, it appears that USF massacred Louisville last Saturday. But realistically, it was a fight.
Amarri Jackson, who has lacked a role in his team's offense during the first three games this season, was crucial in helping USF against a ranked opponent this time. Jackson totaled 63 rushed yards on two carries and 75 yards between two receptions.
