Men's and women's tennis competed in the ACC Championships this weekend at Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C.. Boston College's men's squad played its opening round match against the Clemson Tigers, and fell by a score of 4-0. The Eagles dropped the doubles point, as Clemson's No. 1 team of Clement Reix and Ryan Young defeated BC's Sam Wagner and Alex Rastorgouev by a score of 8-4, and the Tigers' No. 2 team of Jermaine Jenkins and Kevin Fleck beat Eagles' Jason Sechrist and Thomas Nolan by an 8-5 margin.
In the singles matches, Clemson was able to close out the match as its No. 3, 5, and 6 players all won their matches to capture the final three points necessary to advance in the tournament.
Ike Belk of Clemson defeated BC's Dennis Reardon 6-2, 6-0 at No. 6 and Tiger Carlos Alvarez downed Eagle Alex Rastorgouev 6-1, 6-1 to collect the first two points in the singles match.
Clemson clinched the match when Ryan Young knocked off Jason Sechrist 6-0, 6-3 at number three.
In the men's final, top-seeded Virginia won its third title in the past four years, defeating North Carolina, 5-0, to earn the crown. Somdev Devvarman and Treat Huey, the nation's No. 2 doubles pair, beat Lenny Gulan and David Stone of UNC, 8-0, to give UVA the early advantage.
The Tar Heels' Sebastian Guejman and Stefan Hardy beat Dominic Inglot and Houston Barrick in the No. 2 slot to even the score, but Virginia's Teddy Angelinos and Lee Singer earned an 8-6 win over Chris Kearney and Taylor Fogleman to solidify the victory for the Cavaliers.
In singles, UVA continued on its tear, dominating the two, three, one, and six sets and prevailing to the league championship title.
Angelinos earned tournament MVP honors with an impressive singles record of 2-0.
To earn a spot in the finals, UVA defeated Miami, 4-1, and North Carolina took care of 10th-seeded Virginia Tech.
The BC women's squad faced off against the fifth-seeded Flordia State Seminoles and lost by a 4-0 margin. In the doubles matches, FSU's first team of Nicola Slater and Carolin Walter was leading BC's Lauren Cash and Dasha Cherkasov 7-1, before BC's team defaulted. FSU claimed the doubles point when Miranda Foley and Jessica Wente defeated Eagles' Brittany Delaney and Gia Nafarrete by an 8-2 margin.
The Seminoles No. 2, 3 and 4 players all won to clinch the match. At No. 4, BC's Brittany Delaney fell to FSU's Carolin Walter 6-1, 6-0 and at No. 3 Eagle's Alina Sullivan was beaten by the Seminoles' Ania Rynarzewska by a score of 6-1, 6-2 score. Florida State closed out the match when Lauren Macfarlane topped BC's Lauren Cash by a score of 6-2, 6-2.
In the women's final, Georgia Tech fought its way to its third consecutive ACC title with a 4-1 victory over fourth-seeded Miami.
The two squads have faced each other for the past three years in a row, and the outcome has always been the same. This year, Audra Cohen and Laura Vallverdu of Miami earned the first doubles win with an 8-6 defeat of the Yellow Jackets' Kristi Miller and Whitney McCray in the No. 1 slot.
Amanda Craddock and Alison Silverio evened the score for Georgia Tech when they beat Miami's Caren Seenauth and Romy Farah by a score of 8-6. When it came down to the No. 3 position, the Hurricanes prevailed for the early 1-0 lead, when the tandem of Audrey Banada and Gina Sabatino beat Tarryn Rudman and Kirsten Flower, 8-2.
On the singles side, the Yellow Jackets earned a huge win at the No. 1 position when Kristi Miller upset ACC Player of the Year Audra Cohen, 7-5, 6-2. Amanda Craddock and Amanda McDowell also tallied victories for Georgia Tech in singles play.
Christy Striplin clinched the team match point for the Yellow Jackets in the No. 5 slot, when she defeated Caren Seenauth after falling behind in the first set.
Tech's Craddock earned tournament MVP honors with victories in both the singles and doubles positions.
With the league titles, the men of Virginia and the women of Georgia Tech earn automatic bids to the NCAA Tournament.
