The Recycling Effort for the Environment (T.R.E.E.) at Boston College began an aluminum can recycling program, which started in Walsh Hall and in the Eagle's Nest. T.R.E.E.'s efforts helped stop the accumulation of litter. T.R.E.E. was responsible for retrieving cans from depository locations. Container Services, a recycling company, then came to campus to pick up and dispose of the cans. The company paid T.R.E.E. four cents per collected can. Funds collected were used for developing other T.R.E.E. programs, such as newspaper, plastic, and non-refundable bottle removal programs. This recycling initiative was one of the first steps in BC's recycling campaign.
