Hurricane Wilma, a Category 3 storm with sustained 115 mph winds, is bearing down on the Florida coast with tens of thousands of residents fleeing from coastal regions, according to The Los Angeles Times. The hurricane is expected to make landfall today, with officials predicting widespread power outages and flooding. As of yesterday, over 160,000 people are under mandatory evacuation orders and about 3,500 have sought refuge in shelters across the state. Florida Gov. Jeb Bush is concerned that residents in the Keys will not follow the mandatory evacuation because they are weary from evacuation orders. Wilma is the record 22nd named storm of the Atlantic season, marking the first time forecasters have exhausted the regular list of names in almost 60 years of naming storms.
