Continuing a favorite last-day-of-class tradition, the Undergraduate Government of Boston College (UGBC) has announced the headlining acts for this year's Modstock concert. Blackalicious, featuring the Mighty Underdogs, and State Radio will perform, with the Battle of the Bands winner opening.
"Both acts are very cool jam bands for an outdoor show," said Erica Reisenwitz, UGBC executive director of programming and A&S '08. Each headliner, she said, will play an hour-long set after a half-hour opening act, starting at 4 p.m.
UGBC Vice President Dan Sievers, A&S '08, said the choice of performers will appeal to a wider audience than in past years. "It's a pretty diverse show in terms of genre," he said. "We decided to branch out from the one type of music that has been played in previous years."
Blackalicious is an underground hip-hop and rap group, while State Radio - led by the former lead singer of Dispatch - has a "Bob Marley meets Rage Against the Machine" style.
Last year's concert, featuring Saves the Day, was cut short due to the failure of one of the generators.
"The band continued to play acoustically, but only the people in the front could hear them," said Reisenwitz, who said finding a new generator was a "No. 1 priority."
Earlier in the day, the Residence Hall Association (RHA) will celebrate Springfest, an annual event replete with inflatables, a bungee run, and sumo suits.
In keeping with tradition, free hamburgers will also be available, said Alejandro Montenegro, vice president of the RHA and A&S '09. "Having Springfest in the Mod Lot brings a better synergy between the UGBC and the RHA for a combined day of programming," he said.
Springfest will begin at 11 a.m. and end approximately an hour before the concert begins.
