Adam Walsh, A&S '08, took first prize in the Patriot Homebrew beer brewing contest sponsored by Boston Beer Co. Walsh's brew beat nearly 200 other homebrewers from around New England for a $2,000 prize as well as the opportunity to be served on draught at Gillette Stadium during the 2008-2009 football season. "I got to do a lot of traveling in Europe and got to sample beers in Belgium, England, and Germany. When I got back, I wanted to find some beers that tasted like that," Walsh told reporters. Regarding the cash prize, he said, "I haven't decided, actually, yet how I'll spend it, but I'll probably brew a couple of more batches to share with my friends and family and throw a party."

ON CAMPUS UGBC institutes judicial branch, ensure checks and balances The Undergraduate Government of Boston College has forwarded a plan to institute a judicial wing of the undergraduate government. James Ng, chairman of the student judicial board and A&S '09, was appointed Chief Justice, was nominated along with Eric Hinz, CSOM '10, and Melissa Verrilli, A&S '11, who will serve as associate justices. The Judiciary Council, Ng said in an e-mail, was formed to ensure that the UGBC president and vice president work with the UGBC Senate. "In this way, the Judiciary Council acts as the impartial third party to resolve the inevitable internal UGBC disputes that arise every year. Furthermore, the Judiciary Council ensures that both branches are properly performing their duties," Ng said.

UNIVERSITIES Majority of historians polled say Bush worst president ever A series of surveys conducted by Millsaps College professor Robert S. McElvaine that gathered the opinions of 109 historians found that a majority of them view George W. Bush's presidency as an historic failure. Of the historians polled, 98 percent designated his presidency as a "failure," and 61 percent said he ranks as "the worst president ever." Ninety-six percent of the historians polled agreed that he is one of the "10 worst presidents." President Bush has often said that history will judge his actions and those of his administration, and only time will tell how he ranks against other presidents.

College application rejections leaves applicants stressed Record rejection rates have left many questioning the toll that the college admissions process takes on applicants. "The college admissions process is an initiation rite into adulthood," Dr. Kenneth Ginsburg, an adolescent medicine specialist at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, told reporters. "But if success is defined very narrowly, such as a fat envelope from a specific college, then many kids end up going through it and feeling like a failure." Doctors say that the stress related to academic pressures can lead to physical illnesses as well as eating disorders and other psychological symptoms. The number of applicants is likely to continue to climb for the next two years, according to studies.

LOCAL Barbie proves to be America's secret weapon, more than a toy Iran's top prosecutor was quoted as saying that imports of Western toys, particularly Barbie dolls, will have a destructive force on the social and cultural structure of Iranian life. While top Iranian officials often speak out against American cultural influences in the Islamic Republic, Iranian youth tend to take a more liberal approach. Ghorban Ali Dori Najafabadi, Iranian Prosecutor General, made the comments regarding the influence of Western toys in a letter to Vice President Parviz Davoudi. "The unrestrained entry of this sort of imported toys ... will bring destructive cultural and social consequences in their wake," he said in the letter.
