Graduate student wins chemistry award

Haizheng Zhang, a doctoral student in chemistry, won an American Chemical Society Division of Environmental Chemistry Award. The award recognizes outstanding graduate students who are working toward degrees in environmental chemistry. It is based on criteria such as research productivity, a brief discussion of future goals, and a letter of recommendation from their faculty advisor. Zhang was one of only 12 recipients this year and will receive a one-year membership in the division. Zhang worked in the lab of Professor Paul Davidovits.

Waterworks development meeting planned

A meeting to review potential plans for the Waterworks buildings has been set for April 1. At the public meeting, five developers, which including Boston College, will have a chance to show the community their plans for the site. The presentation will include ways to reuse the three historic buildings and new development for an adjacent 1.2-acre pipe yard site. A second meeting will be held a week later on April 8, where community members can ask questions and voice opinions and concerns regarding the proposals. The meeting locations have yet to be determined but will be held at 7 p.m.

New technology improves classrooms

New computer and digital projection technology that allows teachers to easily use film, video, Internet, or other media in conjuction with their teaching is being installed in several classrooms. The first series of installations took place over Christmas break and more are being introduced to this spring. The project upgrade has fully equipped two O'Neill classrooms with computer facilities. They are similarly equipped inGasson 01 and 09. The rooms will be made available by reservation. The project will continue during the summer with more improvements set for McGuinn, Devlin, and Campion.

Scholarship honors Darren D. Gallup

A scholarship was established in memory of Darren D. Gallup, the son of assistant athletic director for Football Operations Barry Gallup, and Victoria Gallup, a former BC employee. Darren Gallup was killed in an automobile accident in February in his hometown of Wellesley. He was an accomplished athlete, honor student, and classical pianist as a senior at Belmont Hill School. The scholarship was set up at the Belmont Hill School. Donations may be made to the Darren D. Gallup Scholarship Fund, Delmont Hill School, 350 Prospect St., Belmont, MA 02478.
