Chamber opera company orchestra, Intermezzo, premiered an opera from Boston College music professor Thomas Oboe Lee on Friday. The opera, called The Inman Diaries, is based on the massive, 17 million-word diary of Arthur Crew Inman, a notorious recluse and one of Boston's great eccentrics. According to an article in the Boston Globe, Lee is a biography fan and was consequently interested when he came across a two-volume edition of the diary in a Cambridge bookstore. The complete edition of the diary, however, runs to 155 volumes. The further he read, the more Lee thought, "This thing might work." Lee composed the opera, which runs about 100 minutes in length, over the course of four months.
ON CAMPUS Psychologist's research shows emotion aids decision making According to a study conducted by psychologists Lisa Feldman Barrett of Boston College and Myeong-Gu Seo of the University of Maryland, it isn't always beneficial for investors to keep their cool when making career-related decisions. The report, which was published in the August/September issue of Academy of Management Journal, stated that "adding emotions to the decision-making process can enhance creativity, engagement, and decision efficiency," according to an article from Reuters. For the study, the professors used 101 stock investors, who were monitored in a "simulated trading exercise" over the course of four weeks. The results of the experiment showed that when an individual's feelings were of greater intensity, their investment returns were higher.
UNDER REPORTED Albanian ignites car, firemen have no water to extinguish it Albanian fishmonger Vilson Alushi had vowed to set his fish delivery van on fire if the Albanian soccer team failed to win a point against the Netherlands on Wednesday. Unfortunately for Alushi, the Dutch team secured a 1-0 victory over the Albanians. Newspapers reported that Alushi set his van aflame and watched indifferently as his friends called the fire department. To further complicate things, when firefighters arrived on the scene, they could not extinguish the fire because after unreeling the hose, they found that there was no water coming out of it. Apparently, residents living near the fire station had drained its water supply in an attempt to help with Albania's chronic water shortage.
