Carroll School of Management accounting students have been working to make the tax process a little bit easier for some Allston-Brighton and Cambridge senior citizens, as well as employees of Boston College Dining Services. "We have someone sit down with every person, and the students get to a point where they will know what to ask, what to look for. They quickly become familiar with certain deductions or credits that people are entitled to. It's a great service," Edward Taylor of CSOM's accounting department told reporters. Taylor has organized student volunteers for the past 10 years in preparation for the April 15 filing deadline.
UNIVERSITIES Federal judge finds plagiarism service does not violate rights A federal court judge ruled against students who said that popular plagiarism detection service Turnitin.com violated their copyrights. The service stores digital copies of submitted student essays in a database to aid in detecting plagiarism. "Schools have a right to decide how to monitor and address plagiarism in their schools and may employ companies like iParadigms to help do so," said U.S. District Court Judge Claude M. Hilton in his ruling. iParadigm is the company that owns the Turnitin.com service. Other students have sued in the past because they felt that Turnitin.com profited from the use of their essays. The lawyer who represented the students said he plans to appeal the ruling.
