BC Center for Retirement links widows to poverty levels A recent study by Boston College's Center for Retirement Research highlighted an alarming trend among retired widows falling into poverty. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 80 percent of women live longer than their spouses; in fact, women outlive their husbands by an average of 14 years. Despite these numbers, men have historically done little to provide enough to prevent their widows from slipping into poverty. While old-age poverty has fallen significantly since the start of the century - poverty numbers are down by two-thirds - nearly three out of 10 widowers over the age of 65 are poor or are nearing the poverty level, according to the study.
