ON CAMPUS University pays tribute to fallen Jesuits with program series In November 1989, six Jesuit priests, their housekeeper, and the housekeeper's daughter were murdered on the grounds of the University of Central America in San Salvador. This month, the University will pay tribute to those priests on the 20th anniversary of their deaths with a series of events. On Nov. 4, Rev. J. Donald Monan, S.J., former University president, will moderate a program called "Living Legacies: The 20th Anniversary of the Martyrs of El Salvador." On Nov. 30, Monan will moderate an open discussion with historian and MIT professor Noam Chomsky and Rev. Jon Sobrino, S.J., co-founder of the University of Central America.

UNIVERSITIES American universities hold top spots in global education ranking Harvard, Stanford, and Berkeley again finished first, second, and third, respectively in the Annual Ranking of World Universities, published Friday by Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China. American universities again dominated the ranking, taking 55 of the top 100 spots. The only non-American institutions in the top 20 were the Universities of Cambridge (4), Oxford (10), and Tokyo (20). The Chinese university's ratings, which are based on a formula that includes the number of alumni who have gone on to win Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, the number of papers published in publications like Nature and Science, and scholarly-citation indexes, are published annually.

LOCAL GPS thief nabbed by police in Comm. Ave. pizza shop lot Michael Patten of Weymouth, Mass., was arrested on Oct. 21 for attempting to steal a GPS system from a parked car at 1198 Commonwealth Ave. in Brighton. Police told reporters that Patten was observed to be intoxicated at the Inbound Pizza Shop on the corner of Harvard Avenue and Commonwealth Ave. Patten was observed walking down Commonwealth Ave. attempting to open car doors. Police watched Patten allegedly open a vehicle and take a navigation system and proceeded to apprehend him. Patten was arrested for breaking and entering a motor vehicle, larceny from a motor vehicle, and resisting arrest.

NATIONAL Halloween with the first family a sweet treat for military children WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama on Saturday doled out presidential M&Ms and dried fruit mixes to more than 2,000 trick-or-treaters, marking their Halloween at a White House event partly aimed at honoring military families. Dressed as superheroes, pirates, fairies and skeletons, the kids came in with their parents from Maryland, Virginia and Washington D.C., lining up at the orange lit White House. The Obamas smiled, chatted and passed out cellophane goody bags that were also filled with a sweet dough butter cookie made by White House pastry chef Bill Yosses and a National Park Foundation Ranger activity book.
