On April 11, presidential hopeful Barack Obama announced a list of prominent Catholic theologians, advocates, and public officials who will serve as his campaign's National Catholic Advisory Council. Among the 49 selected were two Boston College professors of theology, Lisa Cahill and M. Shawn Copeland.
Cahill and Copeland said they were contacted by the senator's Catholic liaison who had been informed that they might consider endorsing the senator. The liaison then asked if they would be willing to advise the campaign. Both said they were flattered and willing to do so.
"I vote in any election, that is my obligation to do so, but I have never been involved in a political campaign before," Copeland said. "To be honest I was a bit delighted to be asked."
"[The liaison] seemed almost concerned that I might not be willing to give the time and support," Cahill said. "But I was very willing and happy to be on it."
