Tim Sullivan, LSOE '10, has never been afraid to get his hands dirty. Whether it's in the classroom (he's already worked full-time at a high school), or in the wilderness (he backpacked for three months in New Zealand and Australia), Tim is always open to new experiences. A native of nearby Duxbury, Tim likes to wakeboard and has a special place in his heart for masochism; he's a marathon runner! As one of six chairs on the Campus School Marathon Committee, he pressed on with strength up Heartbreak Hill during the Boston Marathon. But most importantly, he has great aspirations. In 10 years, he sees himself as a professor in California. What more could one want? My prime cause is…
Teaching. I've been studying to be a teacher and just completed four months working full time as a history teacher for seniors and sophomores at Mount Saint Joseph Academy in Brighton.
I am passionate about my cause because…
I see it as a way to make a difference on an individual basis. There is a lot that is wrong with the world. We can either accept those wrongs, or we can work as active agents for change. For me, teaching is one way to be that change.
My choice news source is…
Common Dreams (commondreams.org, a progressive, liberal news Web site).
A moment that defined my life was…
Backpacking for three months in New Zealand and Australia.
At BC, I'm studying…
History, education, and human rights (faith, peace, and justice).
What I plan on doing once I graduate….
World Teach in the Marshall Islands and the Peace Corps (hopefully in North Africa).
If I could ask BC students to do one thing what would it be...
To take advantage of everything that Boston College has to offer outside of the classroom. The best thing that I have become involved with is working as a chair for the Campus School Marathon Committee. We work to organize runners from BC who raise money for the BC Campus School. The Campus School is, in my opinion, the most unique and amazing aspect of BC in the way it has brought together students of the Campus School and students of BC [and] united them in a common cause. This year, we sent nearly 220 runners to the starting line of the Boston Marathon, the highest ever number of participants. The runners train for 18 weeks, often in grueling Boston winter weather, and raise large amounts of money (this year, while the final numbers are not in, it looks to be between $50 and 60,000), all of which goes directly to the students of the Campus School.
With my work, I hope to achieve…
A community where students are afforded the same opportunities and the same level of compassion and love, regardless of race, nationality, language, religion, sexual orientation, etc.
