Derrick Williams, president of the Undergraduate Government of Boston College (UGBC) and A&S '04, reported the topics of discussion from a meeting last week with Academic Vice President and Dean of Faculties Jack Neuhauser, Executive Vice President Pat Keating, and Dr. Vice President of Student Affairs Cheryl Presley. At the meeting, Williams, Tom Rochowicz, UGBC vice president and A&S '04, Grace Simmons, UGBC president-elect and A&S '05, and Burnell Holland, UGBC vice president-elect and A&S '05, discussed issues regarding the University.
They specifically discussed the Office of First Year Experience (FYE) and what it can do to better inform incoming freshmen of important matters at BC, including AHANA issues and student programs. They also discussed diversity training for those involved in FYE. A committee composed of students will be created to look into improving FYE as well as to offer suggestions for its orientation program.
The recent termination of Barbara Marshall as the director of affirmative action was also discussed. A student committee will discuss the Office of Affirmative Action and its state at BC with Neauhauser and Leo Sullivan, Vice President of Human Resources.
Simmons reported that another assistant dean candidate of AHANA descent for A&S will be visiting the campus this week. She is one of several candidates who have visited the University, and will be taken on a tour of the campus and have lunch with several UGBC members.
Joe Sabia, Legislative Director and A&S '06, reported the progress of the publication of a book tentatively titled, The Idiot's Guide to Boston College. The book will provide a more in-depth and student-oriented look on the University and student life. The book is still in developmental stages.
