Tom Rochowicz and Derrick Williams, both A&S ’04, raise their hands as Mike Davies, A&S ’04, reads them their official oaths.

Derrick Williams and Tom Rochowicz, both A&S '04, were officially sworn in last Sunday as the president and vice president of the Undergraduate Government of Boston College (UGBC) by Michael Davies, legislative chair of the UGBC.

Rochowicz spoke with the legislative directors (LDs) present at the meeting about the role that they would fulfill within the UGBC. "It's a change from what Senate was in the past," he said. "You will actually be in the Cabinet of the UGBC and serving different functions that you see being served by Cabinet members."

"You guys are the voice of the students," he continued. "You'll have a lot of responsibilities. You'll have a ton of work to do, and we look forward to working with you."

Williams said the administration will first tackle the issue of diversity and unity, which was among the top items on the Williams-Rochowicz campaign platform. He also said they were optimistic about the UGBC's reorganization.

"I think this will work well for the UGBC," he said. "It will allow the student body's government to work more effectively for the students."

Rochowicz noted that the year wouldn't be without its growing pains. "I think the important thing for the first year is that everyone remains flexible because it is going to be the first year that we get to see what works and what doesn't."

"Nothing works perfectly the first time," he said. "There will be changes."

Williams and Rochowicz also said that they look forward to working with their Cabinet, which was announced on the UGBC Web site following their inauguration ceremony.

Ninety four people, including LDs, comprise the 2003-2004 Cabinet, and comprise of 42 people with no past UGBC experience. Nearly a quarter of the group is of AHANA descent. The class of 2004 holds 22 positions in the Cabinet, with 31 positions for the class of 2005, and 41 positions for the class of 2006, according to information released by Luke Howe, UGBC chief of staff and A&S '06.

Williams and Rochowicz also appointed five former UGBC presidential and vice-presidential candidates to their Cabinet. The group includes Willis Bruecker and Devon Wyatt, both CSOM '04; Chris Straeder, A&S '04; and Jon Lennon and Sumit Mallick, both A&S '05. Mallick will continue in the position of chief of multicultural affairs, while Lennon will assume the newly created position of chief of intercollegiate affairs.

The group will first assemble for their training during Senior Week.
