Most BC students know O’Connell House as BC’s student union and the place where the infamous Middlemarch Ball takes place. Freshmen may only know it as the old building on Upper Campus that houses the washing machines and may not know what else goes on there. However, besides Middlemarch and the laundry room, O’Connell House hosts many events throughout the year that are worth noting.
Last year, O’Connell House hosted live musical acts such as Aberdeen, Chris Williams and Melissa Ferrick, as well as local Boston favorites the Slip and Jiggle the Handle. Along with those distinguished acts, they also held several open mic nights.
This fall, O’Connell House is planning several events, some of which are new this year, while others are traditional favorites at BC.
The first big event of the season was the Cinderella Ball, which was held last Thursday. This was a function that was designed to get freshmen to know each other.
On October 18, The Warren ghost-hunting group will perform. These world-renowned supernatural experts will give a speech and lecture, and then will demonstrate by proving or disproving the superstitions of whether the turn-of-the-20th-century building is haunted.
November 3 is the Harvest Ball and on March 15, the Middlemarch Ball will take place, which is described by O’Connell House as a “thematic extravaganza put on entirely by students, and is a living example of the creative, expressive side of Boston College’s students.” The theme is not revealed until tickets go on sale in February.
Second semester, there will be open mic nights and concerts. Aberdeen and Cat Tunes are tentatively on the schedule of bands.
