MUSIC/PERFORMANCE

What: Luther Vandross, Boyz II Men Where: FleetBoston Pavillion When: Wednesday, September 6 at 8 p.m.

If you’re not a freshman (meaning, your whole week has not already been planned out for you), this concert might be the main event for your Wednesday night. Hear the harmonious blends of soul and R&B brought to you by the lovemaster himself, Luther Vandross. Tickets cost $54.75 to $69.75 and are well worth it considering you also can enjoy the four ethereal voices of the Boyz II Men. They’ve been around for such a long time, chances are they’re all singing like men by now. You’d think they might want to contemplate a band name modification. Jeremy Zasin always said: “If you’re choosing your group’s name, make it something that can stand the test of time.” Oh, if only the Boyz had known Mr. Zasin.

What: Blue Man Group Where: Charles Playhouse, 74 Warrenton Street When: September 3-30

Call 426-6912 for information on the group of blue men and their showtimes, seeing as they vary (the showtimes, not the blue men). For any newcomer to Boston, it might be best to check this out. If you don’t do it now, you’ll be hounded by people telling you to go see a blue man group show with them for the next four years. So, pay the $39 to $49 for a ticket and take your Blue Man Group medicine now. You won’t be disappointed. In fact, you’ll be delighted.

What: Chrome/Skybar at Axis Where: Axis Nightclub, 13 Landsdowne Street When: Thursday, September 7 from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m.

Chrome at Axis is the new Thursday night gig. The DJs are from all over the country and the beats are progressively funkier than on most other nights. They also play a healthy dose of trance and techno to get the breakdancers to bust out some moves. There’s a $10 cover charge and the age is 19+. Not 19 minus. Repeat. Not 19 minus anything. You must be 19. That is, if you’re a guy.

SPORTS

What: Red Sox vs. Oakland A’s Where: Fenway Park When: Tuesday and Wednesday, September 5 and 6 at 7 p.m.

Tickets cost between $14 and $45. Go see the Sox on the path to a possible play-off spot. If you haven’t been to Fenway yet, you’d better get out there ... because you never know when they might actually tear it down. Call 267-1700 for more information. Isn’t football great?

What: Men’s Soccer v. Notre Dame Where: Newton Campus Sports Field When: Saturday, September 9 from 1 to 4 p.m.

This year, our sole goal at the Best Bets news and information desk is to open people’s eyes to events and organizations that might not get the full attention they deserve. That being said, there’s nothing quite like taking a stroll out to Newton and watching a nice game of soccer over a light conversation and witty exchanges. There’s no charge, and if you’re lucky, the winning goalscorer might remove his shirt and run around the field frantically. As an added bonus, you get a chance to go heckle our fiercest rivals – the blightin’ Irish.

MUSEUM EXHIBITIONS

What: Van Gogh: Face to Face Where: Boston Museum of Fine Arts When: Until September 23

For those that aren’t being lead to the MFA by freshmen event organizers, it might behoove you to know that there’s a wonderful showing of Van Gogh’s work going on for the next two and a half weeks. The exhibit includes many of his famed self portraits which have gained world renown as, and we quote, “Missing ears all over the place.” If you take your BC ID you can get in free —so don’t forget it.

What: Francoise Gilot (1940-1950) Where: McMullen Museum of Art (in Devlin Hall) When: Until September 24th

There’s no excuse not to catch this exhibit before it closes, since it sits here right under our noses. The art is amazing, especially since the time period being shown is from when Gilot was in her early twenties. It makes us here at Best Bets wonder what we’ve been doing with our lives up until now. Personal reflection crises aside, Gilot is an interesting personality. She was a long time mistress of Pablo Picasso and the drawing on the banners all around campus is, in fact, a portrait of the man himself. Her art is stirring and pervasive, expressing the most darkly intimate emotions of our multi-faceted and unexpressibly complex existence. Well \ ... it’s definitely cool to look at, dude.
