He cringed when asked how much the tickets cost: "I haven't been told how much yet. I'm a little scared."
But that didn't really matter. Being eight rows from the field to witness a game with one of the most infamous defections (next to Clemens') in baseball history justifies the price tag and putting Krueger's frenetic life on hold.
Being Baldwin for four years has also been quite a rewarding commitment. For Krueger, it meant going to crazy parties, such as ESPN's 25th anniversary, at which he rode in a limo with two Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders. He was also No. 1 on SportsCenter's Top 10 plays for his backward, half-court shot. That's an honor few BC athletes have attained and perhaps the first and only time Baldwin will be featured on SportsCenter.
The red carpet, velvet ropes, and champagne hurtling from the sky, however, are not the things that Krueger lives for. They're certainly nice perks to go with the job, but by no means are they the crux of his aspirations, or his lifestyle.
The duties of Baldwin advanced but also constrained the life of mild-mannered alter-ego Dave Krueger.
"I was running around all the time. I was so busy that I never just sat around and did nothing," said Krueger about being a mascot while also managing his internships. "I mean, it's great to be involved … but just to wake up at noon on a Saturday and play wiffle ball outside … I guess it goes against all the advice you've ever heard.
"But really, I feel like I've been so involved with stuff that I haven't been able to just sit on my a- and do nothing. College is your chance to do nothing every once in a while and it's OK."
Krueger followed this by saying, "Don't waste your days. I guess that's my last hurrah." This statement may seem contradictory to his previous one, but that's just because his first aim isn't to be run around frantically and do things just to say he's done them; it's something else.
He runs on a different motive: "I live my life to have stories for my grandkids. That's it. Not for money or anything. Now I can tell my grandkids about that Yankees game, about skydiving, about being a mascot. That's what it's all about."
Then again, associating Krueger with one simple mantra doesn't really do him justice. Perhaps in somewhat of a breach of journalistic protocol, here is a list, in no particular order, of little tidbits about Krueger that he thought might be helpful in fleshing him out:He's from Waltham. He likes to go home to see his dog. He wears Chrome cologne. He doesn't really like soda - he is more of a water person. He loves to eat barbecue sauce off anything. One of his favorite hobbies is mooching off people's meal plans.
There are some key and clutch lessons to be learned from Krueger. If you can go watch the BoSox slam a homer in the bottom of the eighth over Damon's head, then forget the interview and suspend your worries about being on time. Don't waste your days worrying or moving too fast for your own good.
