Somethin’ ‘Bout Kreay isn’t without merit, and certainly does not remove Kreayshawn from the industry. Nicki Minaj, arguably the most prominent female rapper in the game, also released a disappointing debut studio album (Pink Friday), even after unprecedented career success beforehand. Somethin’ ‘Bout Kreay simply works too hard conveying who Kreayshawn thinks she should be as an artist, and almost entirely removes her human dimension. The 22-year-old rapper left home at age 15, was expelled from high school at 16, worked as an escort off Craigslist, attended film school, and then grew into a viral superstar in a matter of weeks. It strikes me that someone of such unique qualifications should have made a far more introspective or at least interesting album. Instead, Somethin’ ‘Bout Kreay ironically says very little about Kreay, and a lot more about the vacancies of pop music.
