CHESTNUT HILL - Fifteen games: That is the extent of the Boston College-Notre Dame football series (or rivalry, depending on who you talk to). By the buzz around campus and the number of green-clad visitors to Chestnut Hill, you wouldn't be able to tell that these two teams have met only a handful of times.

CHESTNUT HILL - This past weekend was circled on calendars months in advance. The second-ranked Boston College Eagles squared off in their home opener against longtime rival Notre Dame Friday night before a sellout crowd of 7,884 at the Kelley Rink.

When freshman Brian Boyle first put on skates as a three-year-old, it would have been difficult to predict where the sport would take him. Now, 14 years later, this first-round NHL draft pick stands at 6'7", 225 lbs. and is one of the most highly-coveted players on head coach Jerry York's hockey squad.

These big games certainly do have those defining moments. You know exactly what I'm talking about. These are the moments that still burn brightly in your mind months later when you recall the game. Quinton Porter provided those moments for Boston College this year against Notre Dame.

How the mighty have fallen. Since starting last season 8-0, Notre Dame has lost eight of its last 12 games. This short-lived "Return to Glory" includes two losses against Boston College, that other school that wears the golden helmets. ND may have more tradition, a bigger stadium, and Touchdown Jesus on its side, but the rivalry between the two Catholic schools is slowly becoming an even series.

Over this past weekend of mixed results by Boston College athletic teams, the varsity men's soccer team could not find a way to add another win to its record, as they lost 2-0 to the ninth ranked St. John's University. Last Friday at Belson Stadium in New York, the Eagles challenged the Red Storm in front of a crowd of 1,223, but to no avail.

Several members of the Boston College women's tennis team were selected to participate in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Women's Eastern Regional Championship held at Virginia Tech in the Burrows/Burleson Tennis Center over the weekend. Six players in all were chosen, a number not reached by the Eagles in recent years.

For those who have been following the lawsuit against Boston College filed by the remnants of the Big East, you might think that Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal is a bumbling idiot. Having lived in Connecticut for the past six years, I can assure you that he is.

BOSTON COLLEGE - No undefeated season at stake. No green jerseys. Not even a cameo appearance by Pat Dillingham. Yet, even without the high stakes of last year's game at South Bend, the Boston College-Notre Dame rivalry continued this weekend with more suspense than anyone could have imagined.

"This year, we are just concentrating on our game and no one else's. We all know as a team that if we bring our A-game, we can beat anybody in the country." This type of positive attitude shown by sophomore defender Meghan Nadolski, as well as by the rest of her teammates, has turned this year's women's soccer team into the best Boston College has had in the last eight years.

After putting up a good fight over three games, the Eagles experienced a loss against the Irish 3-0. Two days later, the Eagles faced the Syracuse Orangemen, and in a nail-biter, the Eagles won the match 3-2.

CHESTNUT HILL - Five games on the road and one top ranking in the polls later, the Boston College men's hockey team returned to its home ice at Kelley Rink expecting to score at least a few goals and defeat the University of Notre Dame. In a Friday night match-up against the Fighting Irish, the visitors from South Bend did not play along with the current BC theme of victories over ND.

The Eagles (1-0-0) found themselves in an early hole when, only 2:08 into the game, Quinnipiac forward Vicky Graham stuffed the puck past BC junior and goaltender Lisa Davis.
