BCPD officer a firsthand witness to war in Iraq

"As soon as you get off that plane, you are in harm's way," said First Sergeant Viriato "Vinny" Sena, a Boston College Police Department (BCPD) officer currently serving in Iraq. Exposed to rocket-propelled grenades and improvised explosive devices, the father of four's outlook on life has forever changed.

Revelers were whisked away to a whole new world of sensual décor, music, and food fit for a sultan's pallet Friday night during the Middlemarch Ball. The traditional masquerade ball, organized by the O'Connell House managers, took on an "Arabian Nights" theme, complete with belly dancers and Arabian music that greeted dance-goers as they entered the ball's secret location at Moseley's On the Charles in Dedham, Mass.

Omar Gonzalez, A&S '06, delivered remarks about social injustice after he won the 13th Archbishop Oscar A. Romero Scholarship on Saturday night. "When talking about social justice, we always look to our homelands in Latin America or to the inner-cities," he said.

The annual AHANA Leadership Council (ALC) Ball took place Friday night at the Fairmont Copley Plaza Hotel. A diverse crowd gathered at the dance, sponsored solely by the ALC, which celebrated its 10th anniversary this year. Pursuant to the newly enforced policy on serving alcoholic beverages at student organized events, the ball was a dry affair for the first time, which affected bus loading procedures, according to Joanna Wong, director of programming for ALC and CSOM '06.
Human rights figure analyzes effects of war in Afghanistan, Iraq, and implications

Cofounder of Code Pink: Women for Peace and a long-time human rights activist Medea Benjamin sharply criticized United States' actions in Iraq and Afghanistan, saying that the country's actions have only worsened conditions abroad. Code Pink is a grassroots organization dedicated to peace and social justice, seeking change through protest and nonviolent action.

Imagine having the ability to reconnect with family members who you thought had disappeared forever. Now, thanks to a new database, Irish immigrants and their families from all walks of life can. St. Patrick's Day marked the Boston College Irish Studies Program's much anticipated release of "Information Wanted: A Database of Advertisements for Irish Immigrants Published in The Boston Pilot," the first online database of its kind that allows people of Irish descent to trace their lineage.

Law student Brian Gabriel was sitting in class - using his laptop computer to buy home brewery supplies. His professor called on him to explain the international jurisdiction of war criminals. "I actually think I had the (beer Web site) minimized when he actually called on me," said Gabriel, who insists he knew what was going on well enough to answer the question aptly.

In the past week, transportation officials announced the elimination of four stops along the B line's Commonwealth Avenue route and the eradication of the Night Owl bus service.
