Eagles get first shutout in three years against overmatched Ball State team to get there

All week Boston College football players dwelled on one number. They became obsessed with it; nothing else would have been acceptable.

No. 8 BC 1 No. 9 Duke 0 No. 9 Duke came to Newton Campus trying to do what no team has done so far this season - beat No. 8 Boston College. BC dominated the first half, maintaining near constant possession, but had nothing to show for it. A quick score in the second half turned out to be all it needed as BC hung onto its slim 1-0 lead despite heavy Duke pressure throughout the second half.

Eagles do it in the air. The field hockey team used every inch of the field on Saturday - and a good portion of the air above it - as it attempted to defend its home turf against Duke's Blue Devils. Though the No. 4 Devils dominated the game, the Eagles refused to "roll over," according to coach Ainslee Lamb.

Boston College rugby moved to 2-1 in its conference after a road loss to Northeastern (2-1) on Saturday. NU set the pace for the first half with a quick score in the first four minutes of the game, despite stalwart opposition from BC's forwards that kept NU's pack from pushing through to score.

It was a disappointing weekend for the women's volleyball team, as it dropped two road ACC games to the Virginia Cavaliers and the Virginia Tech Hokies. Boston College fell to 5-9 overall and 0-5 in conference play. Coming into the weekend the Eagles were on a three-game losing streak, having lost their first three conference games to Maryland, Miami, and Florida State.

It's hard being a sports fan. It isn't like being an art buff or a wine connoisseur, where the only time you hear your medium discussed is amongst knowledgeable counterparts. I imagine this as a place where everyone is blessed with tact and class that keeps discussions, and even disagreements, civil.

It's another October and yes, the Red Sox and Yankees are both in the dance. To some, this is probably getting pretty old by now. To some, the whole idea of a third straight ALCS featuring the two foes gives a bored queasy feeling, but hey this is baseball, baby! I'd be lying if I said that I didn't think it would end up like this.

Brian Toal sprinting straight at you on a football field is usually not a good thing. If you find yourself in that unfortunate situation, you're most likely about to be on the receiving end of a punishing tackle or - if he's in fullback mode - a punishing blow on his way to a first down.
