By Patrick Fouhy Editor-in-Chief Tuition, fees, room, and board at Boston College will increase by 5.6 percent for the 2007-2008 academic year, bringing the total cost of a BC undergraduate education to $46,734. Tuition was set at $35,150, mandatory fees at $524, minimum room rate at $6,820, and board at $4,240.

On Thursday night, nine daring men braved the harsh world of beauty pageants, displaying their talents, their wit - and in more cases than not, their bodies - as they vied for the prestigious title of "Mr. BC." The contestants - Tim Bates, A&S '09, Jim Conti, A&S '07, Pat Corcoran, A&S '09, Peter Curran, CSOM '09, Sean Hanel, A&S '07, Chester Li, A&S '08, Donnie Muerer, A&S '07, Alex Rikleen, LSOE '09, and Neil Shea, A&S '07 - had to survive five categories of competition and a round of elimination in order to win the judges' favor and the coveted crown (and robe and scepter) of Mr. BC.

The AHANA Leadership Council (ALC) elected Seif Ammus, CSOM '08, and Rejjie Sahai, A&S '08, as its leaders for next year, replacing the current leadership duo of Noelle Green, A&S '07 and Rose Chou, A&S '07. Elected from a field of four candidates on Sunday by the members of the ALC and the presidents of the Organization of Latin American Affairs, the Black Student Forum, the Asian Caucus, and the Society of Native American Peoples, Ammus and Sahai will be responsible for picking and leading the next ALC.
Leadership conference brings together health care professionals

Friday marked the first time Boston College hosted an all-day leadership and ethics conference specifically designed for clinicians and students in nursing. The conference, titled "Professional Responsibility: Interdisciplinary Collaboration and Leadership in Clinical Ethics," invited experienced nurses, social workers, pre-professionals, undergrads, and grad students to attend the series of lectures and small group discussions.
Asian Pacific American Heritage Month begins with opening speaker

On Friday evening, students and faculty gathered in Gasson Hall to celebrate the beginning of Boston College's fifth annual Asian Pacific American Heritage Month (APAHM). The event was sponsored by the Office of AHANA Student Programs, and co-sponsored by various campus groups, such as the AHANA Leadership Council, Asian Caucus, the Undergraduate Government of Boston College, and Women's Resource Center, along with numerous others.

Ambassador Barbara Bodine delivered a lecture on Thursday presented by the Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies program titled, "Cassandra's Curse, Pandora's Box, The Lessons and Legacy of Iraq." Bodine outlined the diplomatic failures that led to the current situation in Iraq, and explained what policies could produce a stable Iraq in the future.

"I kept telling myself that 'everything will be OK when you're thin,'" said Marya Hornbacher, author of Wasted: A Memoir of Anorexia and Bulimia to a packed house in a Higgins lecture hall on Thursday evening. In an effort to raise awareness concerning eating disorders, Hornbacher was invited to BC to read excerpts from her Pulitzer Prize-nominated memoir as a part of the NAWCHE (National Association for Women in Catholic Higher Education) speaker series.

Last Saturday, members of the Emerging Leaders Program hosted BC Idol, the final event in a series of fundraisers providing money for the New England Floating Children's Hospital. The third annual BC Idol had more than 170 people in attendance, raising more than $1,029 for the charity in that one night alone.
