Six months ago, I sent my brother off to war. The week before he was expected to deploy, I was called home for a family portrait. As my family looked into the photographer's camera, our automatic smiles could not hide the concern that festered beneath. Our eyes stared into the unknown.
A reflection on Sept. 11

The rain had just about stopped by 5 p.m. Tuesday, as students were filtering into the Eagle's Nest, grabbing chairs and joining the little clusters that had formed around tables. Outside in one corner of the Dustbowl, amid the puddles, were 2,973 American flags firmly planted in the soil.
