The 2008 presidential election will be one of the most important political events of our lives. For the first time since 1928, there is no incumbent president or vice president in the race. The next president will undeniably face great challenges: the mess in Iraq, maintaining our supremacy in a globalizing economy, an ever-growing deficit, and 47 million Americans without health insurance.

In the summer before fifth grade, I said goodbye to the playgrounds of my childhood, bid farewell to all the friendships I had kindled since kindergarten, and moved from Mamaroneck to Scarsdale, N.Y. During the impatient days of August, I pestered my parents to drive me to see the red-bricked palace that would soon shelter and nurture me for the seven hours of every school day.

Dear Professor, Please excuse my absence from class this week. It was "Rally Monday" and I was down at city hall to support the Red Sox in their postseason sendoff. No, I'm not officially on the roster, but I fail to see the relevance in that observation.
