Brady Smith, A&S '10, a junior defensive end for the Boston College men's football team often hailed for his "exceptional athletic ability," had high hopes of playing professional football. But during the early hours of April 19, he allegedly broke into a modular apartment on campus and allegedly raped a fellow student.

As the thousands participating in the 112th Boston Marathon reached the top of Heartbreak Hill, they were greeted with the fanfare that has come to be expected of the Boston College student body. This year, several students of the BC Campus School and their family members joined the BC community in cheering on the runners to show their support for the Campus School volunteers who were participating in the marathon.
"My race ends at 21 miles - the adrenaline rush I get coming through BC is unbelievable," said Tim Sullivan, co-chair of the BC Campus School Volunteers Marathon Team committee.
Earth Day festivities embrace sustainability with a slew of activities

It was a typical spring day in the Dustbowl on Tuesday, with students scattered on the lawn soaking up the sun; but the festivities in celebration of Earth Day made it a day not just of environmental appreciation, but awareness. Student groups like Ecopledge, BC Cleansweep, realfoodBC, and Organic Garden set up information booths lining the path through the Dustbowl.
Perez, Ryan to lead GLC as co-presidents; seek to unify GLBTQ community

Last Monday, Celso Perez, A&S '09, and Elizabeth Ryan, CSON '09, were elected as co-presidents of the GLBTQ Leadership Council (GLC) for the '08-'09 academic year. Perez held the position of president of the GLC last year as well; Ryan served as the director of women's issues for the GLC.

The 10th annual Boston College Arts Fest begins this afternoon in O'Neill Plaza. This year's festival marks its 10th anniversary, complete with free birthday cake. The main tent will be larger than in past years, and the planners are expecting a larger crowd draw than in the past.

On April 11, presidential hopeful Barack Obama announced a list of prominent Catholic theologians, advocates, and public officials who will serve as his campaign's National Catholic Advisory Council. Among the 49 selected were two Boston College professors of theology, Lisa Cahill and M. Shawn Copeland.

Beauty pageants are not just for women anymore. On Thursday, the Residence Hall Association sponsored Mr. BC, an annual event in which BC men wore beach and formalwear, answered questions, and showed their talents in a fight for the title. Conor O'Phelan, A&S '08, said winning the competition was, "the best moment of [his] life.

Continuing a favorite last-day-of-class tradition, the Undergraduate Government of Boston College (UGBC) has announced the headlining acts for this year's Modstock concert. Blackalicious, featuring the Mighty Underdogs, and State Radio will perform, with the Battle of the Bands winner opening.

Lovely Hoffman's mission to learn about the culture and explore the heritage of Africa began with the release of her new single, "Motherland." Now, six lucky high school students will accompany her on a 10-day trip to Senegal. Hoffman was born in Boston's Roxbury Orchard Park and attended Boston Public Schools.

Despite the mess of metal bars cluttering O'Neill Plaza in preparation for Arts Fest, a cluster of approximately 50 students clad in red "Support Love" T-shirts gathered there to bring awareness to the silencing of GLBTQ students at Boston College. Their pledge of silence represented the silencing of GLBTQ students around the country.

Sunday brought a rare opportunity for some 40 Boston College students: a chance to go to Mass with the Pope. In the final act of his six-day visit to the United States, Pope Benedict XVI celebrated Mass before a joyful crowd of 57,000 faithful in Yankee Stadium.

Even if you don't know their name, you've seen the results of their efforts around campus. From a new system for separating trash in the dining halls to the light bulbs in your residence halls and recycling totes on Upper Campus, the members of Ecopledge have been working throughout the year to make Boston College a greener university, and they have even bigger plans for next year.
