The graduate Government of Boston College (UGBC) has succeeded in scheduling a fall concert, snagging jazz-influenced hip-hop band the Roots to headline the event. The Roots, slated to perform on Friday, Sept. 12, are only the second fall act to take the stage at BC since 2003.

The drinking culture on Boston College's campus is nothing new - but the University issued a new set of alcohol and drug sanctions last week to try to kick off a proactive effort to quell the growing problem on campus. Listed on the Office of the Dean for Student Development's (ODSD) Web site, the minimum mandatory punishments for student violations of the school's drug and alcohol policy are expected to cause a stir on campus, but Vice President of Student Affairs Patrick Rombalski said it's a needed change.

In an effort to ease neighborhood concerns about Boston College's proposed Institutional Master Plan (IMP), the University purchased the 2000 Commonwealth Avenue apartment complex from Archstone this past summer and increased the proposed campus housing expansion by 110 beds.

In the 22 years since its inception, the Office for the Dean of Student Development (ODSD) has expanded in every direction. As the office's ranks swelled to a professional staff of 20 and former Dean for Student Development Robert Sherwood resigned from his post, the University turned to outside review and a self-study for ways to restructure the office.

For many juniors, the transition from on- to off-campus housing may include as many firsts as any freshman might encounter. The Office of the Dean of Student Development (ODSD), the Undergraduate Government of Boston College (UGBC), the Office of Residential Life, Governmental and Community Affairs, the Off-Campus Council, The Heights, and a number of local dining establishments are hoping to ease this process.

Management of the Boston College Bookstore was sold this summer to the Follett Higher Education Group, manager of more than 800 bookstores nationwide. The Bookstore was previously operated through BC. Follett manages the bookstores at the University of Notre Dame, Vanderbilt University, and the University of Florida, and 16 of the United States' 28 Jesuit colleges and universities, among other schools.
